What made Munich and the Glockenbachviertel so special for Freddie Mercury?
Freedom and anonymity
Mercury enjoyed a rare anonymity and freedom in Munich. He was treated normally by the people of Munich and not as a star, which suited him very well. This allowed him to live out his personality and sexuality openly.
Lively LGBTQ scene
In the 1980s, Munich was one of the most important gay strongholds in the world alongside New York, San Francisco and Amsterdam.
The Glockenbachviertel was the center of this scene with numerous clubs and bars that Mercury liked to visit.
Creative inspiration
Mercury’s time in Munich was very productive musically. Queen recorded five albums at the nearby Musicland Studios, including hits such as “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Another One Bites the Dust”.

Mosaic at the Deutsche Eiche: A mosaic portrait of Freddie Mercury on the façade of the Deutsche Eiche, a traditional meeting place for the LGBTQ+ scene, commemorates the singer (see also below).
Glockenbachviertel: This neighborhood was Mercury’s favorite place to stay in Munich, known for its liberal and diverse club scene.
Freddie-Mercury-Straße: This street is located in the Neuhausen district, but has no direct connection to Mercury’s life in Munich.
Paradiso dance bar (formerly Old Mrs. Henderson): This is where Mercury celebrated his 39th birthday and shot the music video for “Living on My Own” (see below).
Freddie Mercury Tour
Ex-Queen singer Freddie Mercury lived in Munich from 1979 to 1985. The rock star, who died in 1991, recorded several records here in the Musicland studio with his band and enjoyed the (night) life after long working days. He celebrated his birthday here several times with his Munich friends. On our tour, you will get to know Freddie’s preferences and favorite bars and find out which people were important to him and why he felt so at home in Munich of all places. Experience an evening as Freddie might have done a good 40 years ago.
On our tour we will see why he learned to love Munich so much and which places gave him energy and refuge.
The people at Freddie Mercury’s side were Barbara Valentin: a German actress with whom he shared an apartment and a close friendship, and
Winfried “Winnie” Kirchberger: a local innkeeper who became Mercury’s partner.
We will also see the places where these two most important people worked and lived during Freddie’s time in Munich on our tour through the old town and the Glockenbach district.
What were Freddie Mercury’s favorite locations (bars, cafés, clubs) in Munich?
During his time in Munich, Freddie Mercury visited several clubs that were particularly close to his heart. His favorite venues included:
- Pimpernel: This club in Müllerstraße was a central meeting place for the LGBTQ+ scene and was known for its wild atmosphere. Mercury was a regular guest here
- Ochsengarten: Another popular club in the Glockenbach district, known for its leather and S&M scene. Mercury frequented this club often
- Old Mrs. Henderson (now Paradiso Tanzbar): This is where Mercury celebrated his 39th birthday with a legendary party, which was also documented in the music video “Living on My Own” (see above)
- German Oak: A traditional pub in the gay and lesbian scene that Mercury also frequented (see below)
- Petit Café: A small, cozy meeting place that Mercury particularly liked. He spent time here with his girlfriend Barbara Valentin
