Freddie Mercury in Munich

The time of my life!

What made Munich and the Glockenbachviertel so special for Freddie Mercury?

Freedom and anonymity

Mercury enjoyed a rare anonymity and freedom in Munich. He was treated normally by the people of Munich and not as a star, which suited him very well. This allowed him to live out his personality and sexuality openly.

Lively LGBTQ scene

In the 1980s, Munich was one of the most important gay strongholds in the world alongside New York, San Francisco and Amsterdam.
The Glockenbachviertel was the center of this scene with numerous clubs and bars that Mercury liked to visit.

Creative inspiration

Mercury’s time in Munich was very productive musically. Queen recorded five albums at the nearby Musicland Studios, including hits such as “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Another One Bites the Dust”.

The years Freddie spent in Munich were a time of freedom, creativity and self-discovery for him. Here, between the Arabella Haus and the Paradiso Tanzbar, he found inspiration for some of his most famous songs and experienced moments that shaped his music and personality.
Even today, fans from all over the world are drawn to Munich to visit the places where Freddie Mercury lived, worked and partied. The city has not only dedicated a street in his honor, but also preserves many of his favorite places as living memorials.
