With its Schwabing tours (regularly every first Thursday of the month), MucTours offers a great, anecdote-filled insight into the wild and headline-grabbing times of the 1970s to 80s and also shows the Schwabing highlights of today on the approximately two-and-a-half-hour tour.
The meaning of the term “Schickeria”
In the 1970s, the Munich district of Schwabing was a center of the art scene and bohemia.
Writers, artists, intellectuals and other creative minds met here. Schwabing was seen as a symbol of freedom, individualism and cultural diversity.
Many alternative bars, clubs and pubs sprang up where people with avant-garde views and an alternative lifestyle met.
These places became meeting places for artists, musicians and other members of the alternative scene and thus also attracted the wealthy population.
The Schickeria emerged from this milieu and today tends to bring together wealthy and influential people.
The song “Schickeria” by the Spider Murphy Gang was written in the middle of Schwabing. Of course, we also visit “the pub that must be something special”, as the hit says. The “gorilla” at the front door doesn’t let us in, but other reasons prevent us from entering. You’ll see …

Which discotheques were particularly popular in Munich in the 1970s and 1980s?
Munich, especially the Schwabing district, was a hotspot for nightlife in the 1970s and 1980s with numerous legendary discotheques and clubs. In the 70s, Schwabing had a reputation for being charming, forbidden and exciting. It was a center of the hippie and flower power movement. Well-known personalities such as Rainer Langhans and model Uschi Obermaier lived here in the famous “Highfish Commune” in Giselastrasse .
Yellow Submarine:
Opened on April 2, 1971, this club was known as the “shark disco”. It was located in a three-storey building surrounded by an aquarium with 36 sharks. The club was later renamed “Aquarius” and existed until the 2000s with video screens instead of real sharks.
Tiffany:
This club at Leopoldstrasse 69 was the Rolling Stones’ favorite club when they were guests in Munich. Uschi Obermaier is also said to have met Mick Jagger and Keith Richards here.
Blow Up:
Germany’s first open-plan discotheque opened in 1967 on Elisabethmarkt in Schwabing and was one of the most famous nightclubs in Europe until it closed in 1972. The photo on the left shows the American Marsha Hunt, who dated Mick Jagger and became famous in 1968 for her leading role in the rock musical Hair in London.
Big Apple
This is where Jimi Hendrix played his first live concerts in Germany and then smashed his guitar.
Munich Disco Sound
During this time, Munich was not only known for its nightlife, but also for the invention of the disco sound by Giorgio Moroder and Donna Summer in the Musicland studio in Arabellapark. This era is often described as a time of freedom and new beginnings, in which the city consolidated its reputation as a party metropolis (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
In the 80s, nightlife was dominated by the chic crowd.
Clubs like the “Crash” (then on Lindwurmstraße), which still exists today, were popular places to go.

This disco was popular with stars such as Mick Jagger, Frank Zappa and Freddie Mercury between the 70s and 90s.
Pimpernel:
Located in Müllerstraße, this is still a popular place for long-lasting parties until 6am.
Old Mrs. Henderson (now Paradiso Tanzbar):
This is where Mercury once celebrated his 39th birthday and filmed the music video for “Living on My Own”.

Schickeria Schwabing Tour
The tour schedule
We meet at the south-eastern subway exit Giselastraße (subway lines 3 and 6) and start at Leopoldstraße, house number 28a, a place steeped in history.
The now rather inconspicuous building was once home to Città 2000, a colorful and diverse shopping and entertainment center. This vision of the future by the two Samy brothers was just one of several properties with which they left their mark on Schwabing in the late 1960s/early 1970s and made the district one of the coolest in the world.
On the tour, which takes us up to Münchner Freiheit, we will repeatedly come across venues that were once run by this pair of brothers and which attracted stars by the dozen. Our city explorers are all absolute Schwabing connoisseurs and have numerous anecdotes up their sleeves that wonderfully illustrate how wild and unbridled things used to be in this neighborhood.
Legendary discotheques, fantastic live clubs, bizarre characters and an omnipresent sense of freedom that we no longer know today. We visit all these places, have the pictures from back then at hand and tell stories that will either make you shake your head, smile or laugh.
To make sure our throats don’t dry out on the tour, we also visit two cult bars with a long history and make a stopover there. One of them is – this much can already be revealed – the good old Drugstore from the Samy brothers mentioned at the beginning. You can still feel the flair of times gone by in today’s Hamburgerei, where we end the evening in a cozy atmosphere. From there, it’s just a stone’s throw to Münchner Freiheit, which is well served by public transport.
